<image:caption>Montague Rhodes James was born in 1862 at Goodnestone in Kent. He attended King’s College, Cambridge, and later became its provost, leaving to take up the provost’s position at Eton College. He published many scholarly antiquarian works, but quickly became known for his ghost stories, which are now recognized as the finest in the genre; of these, four collections were published. He died at Eton in 1936.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Stella Tennyson Jesse - Stella Tennyson Jesse</image:title>
<image:caption>STELLA TENNYSON JESSE was born in 1887. Her younger sister Fryn was to become known as the famed novelist and crime-writer F. Tennyson Jesse. Overcoming a stammer after the First World War, Jesse became a noted stage actress; her work included appearing in productions of plays by her brother-in-law H. M. Harwood, Fryn’s husband. A journey up the Nile in 1926-27 with Fryn, Harwood and a bachelor uncle provided the inspiration for her only book, Eve in Egypt, which was originally published under the pseudonym Jane Starr in 1929. Just after publication she married Eric Simson, who was a noted novelist under the nom de plume Laurence Kirk. Stella Tennyson Jesse died after a battle with lung cancer in 1942, at the age of 55.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Katherine Mansfield - Katherine Mansfield</image:title>
<image:caption>KATHERINE MANSFIELD was born in Wellington, New Zealand, in 1888. She moved to London as a young adult. Her first collection of stories, In a German Pension, was published there in 1911, the same year that she met her future husband, noted critic John Middleton Murry. Mansfield also had many relationships with women. In 1917 she was diagnosed with tuberculosis, and for the remainder of her life she travelled seeking a cure. Her next book, Prelude, a novella published in 1918 by Virginia and Leonard Woolf at the Hogarth Press, was widely acclaimed as one of the finest works of the period. She published two more collections of stories before her death in 1923, aged 34. After her death Murry published two further collections - which cemented her reputation as one of the finest short story writers of the twentieth century - as well as her poems, journals and letters.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Stella Benson was born at Lutwyche Hall on Wenlock Edge in Shropshire in 1892. Having escaped restrictive family life, she worked in London in the suffrage movement and in social work in the poorest areas. She married Shaemas O’Gorman Anderson in 1921, and travelled the world with him to his many customs posts, mainly in China. She wrote eight witty, highly individual, acclaimed novels, as well as stories, travel essays and poetry. Consumptive for most of her life, she died in Hongay in French Indochina in 1933, at the age of 41. On her death, Virginia Woolf wrote in her diary “A curious feeling: when a writer like Stella Benson dies, that one’s response is diminished; Here and Now won’t be lit up by her: it’s life lessened.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Mary Webb was born Mary Gladys Meredith in the village of Leighton in Shropshire in 1881. At the age of 20 she developed symptoms of Graves’ disease, keeping her in somewhat ill-health for the rest of her life. She married Henry Bertram Law Webb, a teacher, in 1912. Her first novel The Golden Arrow, published in 1916, was followed by five others, as well as essays, poems and stories. Her fifth and most famous novel Precious Bane was awarded the Prix Femina. Mary Webb died still relatively uncelebrated in 1927 at the age of 46. Soon after her death the Prime Minister, Stanley Baldwin, spearheaded a campaign of recognition of her talent, gaining her posthumous bestseller status and cementing her reputation as a writer giving a twist of modern genius to the classic tradition of Thomas Hardy and Emily Bronte.</image:caption>

Following his father into the Imperial Police, he was posted back to Burma. After contracting malaria, he returned to England where his writing career blossomed. When war broke out in 1914, he refused a commission and joined up as an ordinary trooper. During the Battle of the Ancre in 1916, whilst resting in a crater, he was shot dead by a German sniper. His output included some of the funniest stories in the English language, as well as plays, essays and two novels.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Lord Byron - Lord Byron</image:title>
<image:caption>GEORGE GORDON, sixth Lord Byron, was born in 1788. After schooling at Harrow, and university at Cambridge, he left on the Grand Tour of Europe and the East. On his return his mother died and he assumed full control of the family’s considerable estates. He married Anne Isabella Milbanke in 1815, but the marriage quickly soured. They had a daughter Ada. After the controversy of his divorce he settled in Italy, where he had a short-lived affair with Claire Clairmont, the stepsister of Shelley’s wife Mary, which also produced a daughter, Allegra. Byron entered into a long-term relationship while in Italy with the married Countess Guiccioli, which proved the most comfortable liaison of his life by far. His daughter Allegra died of an unspecified complaint in an Italian convent in 1822. Byron’s belief in the cause of Greek independence from the Ottoman Turks caused him to fund their cause significantly, and take a part in the fighting, from 1823. He died of a fever during the Greek campaign in 1824.</image:caption>

<image:caption>ALPHONSE DAUDET was born in Nîmes in 1840. His writing career began, after an abortive attempt at schoolteaching, with a volume of poems in 1858, though it wasn’t until 1874 that he had a prominent success with Fromont Junior and Risler Senior, a novel. Many notable novels followed, of which the most famous is Sapho (1884). He also produced plays, books for children, and many classic short stories and sketches. He is now recognized as one of the great French writers of the nineteenth century. His two sons Léon and Lucien were also celebrated writers. Plagued by syphilis for much of his life, he died in Paris in 1897, at the age of 57.</image:caption>

      <image:title>George Sand - George Sand</image:title>
<image:caption>George Sand (Amandine Dupin, afterwards Baroness Dudevant) was born in Paris in 1804. She was raised largely by her grandmother at the family estate of Nohant in Berri, a region of central France. After rebelling an unsuccessful marriage, she had affairs with authors Prosper Merimee and Alfred de Musset, composer Frederic Chopin, and the actress Marie Dorval, among others. Her output of acclaimed novels, plays, travel sketches and autobiography was prodigious, beginning in the late 1820s and continuing until her death in 1876.</image:caption>

      <image:title>James Montgomery - James Montgomery</image:title>
<image:caption>JAMES MONTGOMERY was born in Ayrshire in 1771. His parents were missionaries who died within a year of each other in the West Indies, leaving him to fend for himself in Britain. As owner of a newspaper, The Sheffield Iris, his political zeal led to two short periods of imprisonment, and their accompanying poems, Prison Amusements. He went on to compose several acclaimed long poems including The Wanderer of Switzerland, The West Indies, The World Before the Flood, Greenland and The Pelican Island, as well as many smaller verses, and almost 400 hymns. The last twenty years of his life were spent in and around Sheffield in civic work, where he is remembered as an influential citizen. He died in 1854.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Ada Leverson (nee Beddington) was born in 1862. She married Ernest Leverson at the age of 19, against her parents' consent, but the marriage was not a success. She became a contributor to several literary and artistic journals including Black and White, St Stephen's Review and, most notably, The Yellow Book in the 1890s. It was at this time, after she published a brilliantly successful sketch parody of his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, that Oscar Wilde desired to meet her, and dubbed her The Sphinx. They became the greatest of friends, and she was instrumental in helping him after the disaster of his trial, when many others deserted him. Her six sparklingly witty novels were published between 1907 and 1916. She died in 1933.</image:caption>

They moved around a great deal following his teaching appointments, which proved a fine ground for inspiration for her novels. Tiburon, first published in 1935, was her first novel, and was followed by eight others, as well as biographies, plays and children’s books, establishing her as one of the finest Australian voices of the twentieth century. <image:caption>JUHANI AHO was born Johannes Brofeldt in 1861. He studied classical languages at the University of Helsinki. His love for Aino Järnefelt, one of the younger members of the famous artistic family, was unfulfilled; she married Jean Sibelius instead. He translated many writers into Finnish for the first time, including Daudet, Hugo and Maeterlinck, and also worked as a journalist, taking on his new Finnish name early in his career. His own output included many novels, sketches and short stories, ranging stylistically over time from realism to neo-romanticism. He also founded a newspaper. He died in Helsinki in 1921.</image:caption>

He was educated at Eton and Oxford and served in the Scots Guards during World War II, for his part in which he was awarded the Military Cross. In 1948 he married Virginia Forbes Adam. In 1951 after a couple of years of glamorous living as a Paris correspondent for the Daily Mail, he moved with his wife and their two children to the far north of Scotland in order to concentrate fully on journalism and writing novels, the first of which, A Share of the World, appeared in 1953. There followed three more children and a further eight novels, as well as two children's books and several acclaimed TV plays, before his untimely death from cancer in 1970, at the age of 48.</image:caption>

Though she passed the entrance exam for Somerville College in 1917, she chose to delay her entry and serve in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps. After graduation in 1921 she began to develop a literary career. An ardent feminist and pacifist, she also worked tirelessly for the League of Nations Union and other social causes. She published short stories, satires, poetry and acclaimed critical works, as well as six novels, the last of which was the modern classic South Riding. In the early 1930s she was diagnosed with Bright’s disease, which eventually cut tragically short her very active life. She died in 1935.</image:caption>

      <image:title>W. Clark Russell - W. Clark Russell</image:title>
<image:caption>William Clark Russell was born in New York in 1844 to a prominent English family. He joined the Merchant Navy at the tender age of 13, and spent eight years at sea. The harsh conditions permanently damaged his health, and on returning to Britain he began to develop a career as a writer, particularly on nautical subjects, including a regular column in The Daily Telegraph. His career took off with the publication in 1877 of The Wreck of the ‘Grosvenor’, his second nautical novel. He was very well respected for the lyrical clarity of his prose: Swinburne described him as ‘the greatest master of the sea, living or dead’; he also corresponded for many years with Herman Melville. He concurrently campaigned passionately for improvements in the lives and conditions of merchant sailors. He died in 1911 at the age of 67.</image:caption>

<image:caption>SELMA LAGERLÖF was born at Mårbacka in the Värmland region of west-central Sweden in 1858. She started out as a teacher, writing in her spare time. The first few chapters of her first novel, Gösta Berling’s Saga, won a competition, and the finished book slowly gained influential admirers who supported Lagerlöf in her work. She went on to write many novels, including The Wonderful Adventures of Nils and The Emperor of Portugallia. In 1909, she was the first woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. She was also active in the women’s suffrage movement. Shortly before her death aged 81 in 1940 she successfully campaigned to get the Jewish writer Nelly Sachs and her mother out of Nazi Germany.</image:caption>

<image:caption>KAREL ČAPEK was born in the Bohemian province of Austria-Hungary in 1890. He graduated from university in Prague with a doctorate of philosophy. Exempted from military service through ill health, he spent his early years as a journalist and writer, observing the First World War and becoming affiliated with the nascent Czech independence movement. A career filled with plays, stories, novels and non-fiction writing flowered as the postwar era took hold; his play R.U.R. (1920) was immediately internationally celebrated and introduced the word ‘robot’ into common usage. His most famous novel War with the Newts was published in 1936. Many of his works were illustrated, and occasionally co-written, with his brother Josef. Their sister Helena was also a writer. Karel Čapek was nominated for the Nobel Prize seven times, but never won. He died of pneumonia in 1938 at the age of 48. His brother Josef died in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in 1945.</image:caption>

She was expelled from the Royal Naval School in Twickenham for organizing feminist protests. An unsuccessful marriage caused her to seek her independence by writing; her first novel was published in 1888. Several extremely successful novels and stories followed which embraced the themes of the New Woman movement, most notably The Heavenly Twins (1893) and The Beth Book (1897). <image:caption>TOBIAS SMOLLETT was born in 1721 at Dalquhurn, now a part of Renton in Dunbartonshire. He qualified as a surgeon at the University of Glasgow. In an attempt to fulfil his literary ambitions, he left Scotland for London in 1739 to try his luck as a dramatist. Lack of success spurred a career as a naval surgeon which took him to a new life in Jamaica for several years. On his return to London he set up in practice and married. His first literary success was a novel, The Adventures of Roderick Random, in 1748, which was soon followed by four more of equal favour as well as a flood of translations, poetry, plays and historical works. Increasing ill health forced a removal to Italy, where he died in 1771 at the age of fifty. He was buried in the English cemetery at Livorno.</image:caption>

<image:caption>ROSALIND BRACKENBURY was born Rosalind Crabtree in 1942. She was schooled in Sherborne, studied history at Cambridge, and married Michael Brackenbury in 1965. They had two children, but the marriage didn't last. Her first two novels, A Day to Remember to Forget and A Virtual Image, were published in 1971, and were followed by seven more volumes of celebrated fiction and some acclaimed poetry, while she lived in Britain. A long residence in Edinburgh was followed by her decision to remove to the Florida Keys in the early nineteen-nineties, and her marriage to an American, Allen Meece. Since moving there, she has published several more poetry volumes, a children's book, a critical appreciation of Virginia Woolf's writing techniques, a self-help guide for aspiring writers, and ten more works of fiction, including in 2019 her latest novel, the extraordinary Without Her. Currently, alongside writing her own work, Brackenbury helps others as a sought-after teacher of writing workshops.</image:caption>

His career slowly blossomed with novels, stories, more poetry, autobiography, philosophy and literary criticism, all marked with his highly individual vision, as well as many appearances on the lecture circuit, mainly in the United States, where he lived between 1905 and 1934. Two of his brothers, Theodore and Llewelyn, became famed as writers during this time. He wrote several deeply influential major novels, including Wolf Solent (1929) and A Glastonbury Romance (1932), as well as a remarkable autobiography, published in 1934. He and his second partner, Phyllis Playter, lived in Wales until his death in 1963, at the age of 90.</image:caption>

She grew up mainly in her family’s homes in Ireland, and developed a profound attachment to the Irish landscape and people which inspired her life and works. She married Richard Girouard in 1927, and converted to his Catholic faith in 1929, causing a minor social storm; they had three children, one of whom is the noted architectural historian, Mark Girouard. Her granddaughter, and namesake, is also an esteemed writer. Her only novel, The Story of Keth, was published in 1928, and her sole volume of short stories, The World is for the Young, was published in 1935, both to great acclaim. <image:caption>HENRY HANDEL RICHARDSON was born Ethel Richardson in Melbourne in 1870. Her marked musical skill decided her mother on removal to Germany, enabling Ethel to pursue her studies in Leipzig. Though the majority of her sexual orientation was lesbian, she married a Scots scholar of German, John Robertson, in 1894. Her first novel, Maurice Guest, based on her experiences in Germany, was published in 1908, after they had moved to London. There followed a classic short novel of coming of age, The Getting of Wisdom, in 1910, and her acclaimed trilogy The Fortunes of Richard Mahony, between 1917 and 1929. Her short works were published in 1934, and her final novel of the life of Cosima Wagner, The Young Cosima, in 1939. She died of cancer in 1946, at the age of 76.</image:caption>

<image:caption>JAMES JOHN HALDANE BURGESS was born in Lerwick in 1862. In his last year of study for a Master’s degree in Arts at the University of Edinburgh he lost his sight, and completed his final exams orally. Back in Shetland thereafter, he published a significant volume of poetry in Shetlandic, the classic Rasmie’s Büddie, as well as other poems, three novels, and occasional prose pieces. He was a self-taught scholar of Norwegian and a pioneer investigator of Shetland’s Norn variant, as well as a keen exponent of the Norse influence on Shetland’s culture, including assisting with promoting the Up Helly Aa fire festival. He died in 1927 at the age of 64.</image:caption>

<image:caption>FLORA MACDONALD MAYOR was born in Kingston in 1872. After reading history at Newnham College, Cambridge, she briefly became an actress. She published her first book, a collection of short stories entitled Mrs Hammond’s Children, under a pseudonym in 1901. An engagement in 1903 ended in tragedy, with her fiancée dying of typhoid in India. Success came with her first novel, The Third Miss Symons, in 1913. The novella Miss Browne’s Friend followed in 1914-15, published serially. Two other novels, The Rector’s Daughter and The Squire’s Daughter, which expanded upon the theme which became her signature, the vicissitudes of the lives of single women in her time, were published after the war. She died in 1932 at the age of 59. In 1935, her ghost stories were collected under the title The Room Opposite.</image:caption>

<image:caption>BASIL RAMSAY ANDERSON was born in the northerly Shetland island of Unst in 1861. When he was five his father was drowned at the haaf (ocean fishing) off the island, leaving his mother to cope alone with six young children. They moved to Edinburgh in his teens. He was closely involved in the life of the expatriate Shetlanders who formed a group in exile there, both in the church and in radical politics. He published few poems in his lifetime, only gaining wider recognition for his abilities after his death from tuberculosis in 1888, at the age of 26.</image:caption>

Summer holidays were always spent on the island of Foula, which her grandfather had bought at the beginning of last century. She married an islander and has lived there very happily ever since. She is a keen crofter, breeding sheep and Shetland ponies and has a great interest in the island's wildlife and culture.</image:caption>

His first book, The Viking Isles, was published in 1933. He founded the famous New Shetlander magazine in 1947, which has fostered writing on and in Shetland vigorously since its inception. His only other book, Letters on Shetland, was published in 1949.
